In this King short story, Darcy Anderson is on a mission; to find batteries for her blessed television remote. Checking in the pristine garage of her husband of twenty-seven years, Bob, she stumbles across something she never thought possible.

Taking the time to examine it, she ponders how well she knew the man she married and what this means for her, as well as for them.

While she makes a decision that suits her best, she tips her hand in a call to Bob, who is away on business, and begins a ser In this King short story, Darcy Anderson is on a mission; to find batteries for her blessed television remote.

While she makes a decision that suits her best, she tips her hand in a call to Bob, who is away on business, and begins a series of events that leads to his confronting her with what she knows.

After coming to terms with her discovery and entering into a marital agreement with Bob, Darcy is left to stew with the knowledge of it all.

It is only after a freak accident and a discussion with an older gentleman that her worries are put to rest, permanently. A great short story that shows the lengths to which married couples will work together, no matter the issue at hand.

Reading Stephen King can be a challenge at times. The reader must put off the straightforward story and wade through a number of tangents just to get to the crux of what is being presented.

This format is present, in spades, in this short story, though it does add some drama to the narrative.

As always, King seeks to poke a little fun at his macabre genre and paints a picture of both marital bliss and complete distrust, all in the guise of some wayward event.

However, also reminiscent of many King novels, the truth comes crashing down and the story ends in a whirlwind, like an exciting ride on a literary rollercoaster, leaving the reader completely sated and ready for another go, should time permit.

Kudos, Mr. King for this wonderful story and interesting backstory folded within its creases. Dec 10, Chance Carden rated it really liked it Shelves: goosie-scale-rated-reads , stephen-king.

This was an interesting short read from King. The most interesting part was, while being fairly predictable, I was asking in the middle of the story, "how can this story possible continue and be interesting?

Yet this story, without having any insane plot twists throughout the ending, kept me engaged until the end. It wasn't unnecessarily drawn out, nor overly unique, but very well written and enjoyable.

Goosie Scale Rating: 7 This was an interesting short read from King. This one also delivers on that front, particularly when considering the fast pace of the short story.

Again, the overarching problem comes to a head early on, so there are some chilling scenes dished out quickly. It pairs nicely with the title, and ropes the reader immediately to find out where it will lead.

Jan 12, Sarah rated it really liked it Shelves: horror , thriller , short-fiction. Listened to this today while cleaning. The narrator was questionable but I mostly enjoyed it.

Like many a good Stephen King story, this is fairly predictable. But it wasn't about the end, it was about the journey. They had a good marriage.

I'm a huge King fan and had never heard of any book or story with that title, nor had I heard anything about the movie.

Anyway, I put it on my "to watch" list, guessing that perhaps he had just written a screenplay. However, on the very same day I was browsing GR and saw that my friend Cheryl had read and enjoyed it.

Naturally I immediately purchased a copy it's only available A few weeks ago I was looking at the Netflix streaming new releases and saw a movie, "Stephen King's A Good Marriage".

Naturally I immediately purchased a copy it's only available as an ebook as far as I can tell. The story itself falls somewhere between novella and novel length there's a bonus story at the end which I'll discuss below and is excellent.

Dismiss King as a genre writer all you want, but he manages to write about the relationships between husbands and wives like an Anne Tyler.

Take this perfect first line, which will ring true to anyone who has been married for awhile They asked how was your weekend and how was your trip to Florida and how's your health and how are the kids; they even asked how's life been treatin you, hon?

But nobody asked how's your marriage? Darcy and Bob Anderson have been married for more than two decades. They've raised their two children and they are settling into a comfortable, reasonably happy middle age side by side, Darcy with her homemaking and hobbies, Bob with insurance work and his coin collection.

Until one night Darcy needs batteries. The rest is classic King, well written, interesting and believable.

As Darcy knows, "a successful marriage was a balancing act-that was a thing everyone knew. A successful marriage was also dependent on a high tolerance for irritation Has Bob?

And what ARE the limits? Good, solid story. The bonus story is titled "" and it's also novella length. I read it, and liked it OK, then glanced at the copyright page yes, I'm a nerd and noticed that apparently it was published in King's book, Full Dark No Stars , which I definitely read, but I have absolutely zero recollection of this story.

Not even after being reminded that I have read it. So take that for what it's worth. I bet this was a great audiobook.

I can't imagine how horrific this scenario would be in real life. I read most of this book at night, I could literally feel the tension when he arrived home unexpectedly.

This is a very scary, realistic, novella. The horror doesn't come from some malevolent spirit. It comes from a dangerous I bet this was a great audiobook.

It comes from a dangerous, narcissist, monster. I thought the end justified the means. When Holt left Darcy's home, telling her she did the right thing.

I was shocked. At first, I thought that Holt was either too old to pursue this any further, was too lazy, or was very intelligent.

Considering he left that morning, in a state owned car, without proper heating, surely eliminated my "lazy" theory. Lazy people just don't do that!

I think Holt was intelligent and intuitive. What could Darcy really have done? She was an older, unemployed woman who was stuck in a very unfortunate situation.

Holt could see that she was not involved in these crimes and he ending up doing the right thing What Holt did was probably not correct in the eyes of the law, but I felt was correct in the eyes of humanity.

Sometimes I wish justice wasn't always black and white. There are many layers of gray. View all 15 comments. May 20, Debra rated it really liked it.

Really enjoyed this book by Stephen King. I loved the concept of how one person's life can forever change just by walking to the garage to find some batteries.

Just how much do you know about your spouse? Great premise and a great novella. Sep 25, Linda rated it really liked it.

I used to be a big King fan but slowly moved away from his books sometime after Christine. The other day I saw him interviewed about the new film based on this novella and was intrigued with the storyline.

What if your husband isn't the man you thought he was; what if he's a monster? I picked up the book and read it in one sitting since it's less than pages.

You know how it is when you run into an old friend you haven't seen for a long time? Sometimes you pick up right where you left off.

Th I used to be a big King fan but slowly moved away from his books sometime after Christine. This story had the best elements of a King story for me.

With a 43 year good marriage under my belt, I had to ask myself what I would do if I found out something really horrible about my spouse.

I hadn't a clue! Reading Darcy's thoughts and what she chooses to do propelled me along; I couldn't put the book down until I finished it.

King knows that no matter how old our children are, we mothers have to consider them when we make decisions that will affect them.

He's been married 43 years also and knows all the twists and turns a good marriage takes, so everything the wife does and doesn't do rang very true to me.

The more I think about the story, the more bone chilling it is and a very satisfying read indeed. View 1 comment.

What would you do if you found out that you husband is not who you thought he was? This was such an interesting story.

A woman finds put her husband's deepest secret and has to make a choice. Should she forgive him? Should she do something?

I really loved the beginning of this story. The tension was built up perfectly, the emotions were described thoroughly. Honestly, the only problem I had was that the second half, which sould've been the longer one, seemed too short and fast paced for my taste.

I What would you do if you found out that you husband is not who you thought he was? It could've been a lot longer and "horrifying" than it was.

Overall, it was quite an entertaining read. I would recommend for anyone that wants to read something short and tense.

The only thing I got out of watching it is that tootsie rolls are trying to make a comeback and maybe payed for some advertising in it.

They had the most suspenseful star role. You never knew when or where a box of them was going to pop out of.

Sorry Stephen King. They thrust plot twists like karate chops. The threads of the story kept me off balance. Usually, I figure out the story quickly not this time.

Anyway, for some bizarre reason, I feel the need to give you the blow by blow of Debbie reading A Good Marriage. My friend promised that this is not the Stephen King of gore or the supernatural.

I take these promises very seriously. I happily sigh and dig in. What a master storyteller, this King man.

Give me more! Hell, I want to help her open the thing up. Each utterance and its response, each ping-pong volley—click bounce click bounce—startles me, grabs me, and holds me tight.

Creepy times eighteen. Cannot, will not, put this book down. The hell with getting the clothes out of the dryer; who says I need to change into a clean shirt?

My head is full of exclamation points!!! I love this story! A tight, perfect tale with plenty of thrills and a psychopath of nightmares!

I ditch the exclamation marks and spit out a bunch of question marks. Where could this story possibly go? Will we follow the wife somewhere?

Will the old detective guy change his mind? Okay, okay. I calm myself down and switch from shock to admiration and wild anticipation.

Man, King is the king! What can this genius have up his sleeve? More yum is yet to come! My head is still spewing out questions.

Will I be learning about the ancestors of the sociopath. How can that be exciting? Will it turn into a ghost story?

Trust the king, I tell myself, just trust him. The tone is different. The characters are different. Throw me a familiar name, will you mister master King man?

Blood and guts everywhere!! My friend lied! She knows I hate gore. There has to be a logical explanation.

When in doubt, check out Goodreads. It was! The faith in my friend returns. I resign myself to finishing because I have to see what happens.

Extreme sport of gore. Rats feasting on people and cows, and not a repulsive detail is spared. Get me out of here!

A well-written story with good characters, but I had to skip at least one whole percent point. Tap tap tap the screen, get me away from the ravenous rats!

As it was, I thought that A Good Marriage had taken a bad left turn by changing its tune and heading back to the year I began doubting the greatness of King when seemed to have nothing to do with A Good Marriage.

I thought my friend had lied to me, since the book had turned into gore city. I resent that the longer story full of blood and rats was longer and stole more of my time than the wonderful Good Marriage story.

If I had been reading a paperback, I would have known what was going on. If was included, I would have passed on it since it was so sorely gore-ful.

But finally! Good, she would have answered the question before that night. A Good Marriage is a masterpiece. The pacing is perfect and the characters jump off the page.

Man, can King tell a good story! The psychopath scared the shit out of me. The conversations between this creepazoid and his creeped-out wife are brilliant.

The internal monologue of the wife is just as brilliant. How well do you really know someone you love? When you discover that that someone is evil, do you confront him or keep your trap shut?

I had to ask myself: What would I do in a similar situation? Yet, I was torn over it because some people would never have the closure they deserved.

Jessica Hecht did a superb job with the narration lending a wholesome innocence to Darcy that made the horror of her predicament stand out even more.

What a great look at two short stories novellas by Stephen King. What if you find out the person you married, had children with, made love to, told your troubles to, was not who they seemed to be.

What if they were a monster? What would you do? King does a great job of showing a marriage of comfort that gets upended when something sinister is revealed.

No spoilers, just don't know if I could have been as strong. One reason why I love King, and always will What a great look at two short stories novellas by Stephen King.

One reason why I love King, and always will, is that he shows you how monsters and those who do evil just look like those around us.

I think the reason they put "A Good Marriage" and this one together is to show the contrast between a comfortable marriage and one that has gone to seed.

You may pity the main character I did and end up thinking long about irony. Great stories! Recommend strongly. Of course not. No more than he knew everything about her [ Until that night in the garage.

Together they have two children and they own a successful mail-order business that deals in collectible American coins which causes Bob to be away on travel frequently.

During one of his trips, Darcy goes in search of batteries in the garage after the TV remote dies. In her search, she finds disturbing pornographic magazines that she never would have dreamed Bob would ever read but that ended up being the least disturbing thing she found in the garage that night.

Dennis Rader was a serial killer that murdered a total of ten people between the years and He was a seemingly innocuous member of his community; president of his church council, Cub scout leader and married with two children.

No one ever looked at him twice until he was finally caught and convicted of his crimes in A Good Marriage is a short yet disquieting read that makes you wonder just how well you know the ones you love.

Darcy and Bob were married for years and she never once suspected that her loving husband was capable of such brutality; never thought that the serial killer on the news could be the man she married.

My initial response to the ending of this story was discontent. I felt more detail was necessary to properly end this tale and I was honestly expecting a twist that never came.
